This was the first lecture after the introduction of the course and had a focus on where research questions come from and what makes them effective.
Main understandings and takeaways were:
Research questions emerge from a myriad of factors:
- Conflict / Tension.
-Whether that be theoretical, methodological, professional, historical, cultural or political.
- Overlooked perspectives or practices.
- Specific to population, group or social identity.
- Enriching or a new appraisal of existing knowledge.
- Purely a methodological approach eg, discourse analysis, literature review etc.
Key points for developing RQ's:
- Specific - the what and the why?
- The idea is to have the main question with a few sub-questions that answer the main issue.
- Clear and concise - brief and easily understandable using everyday language.
- Leave no room for ambiguity.
- Give context - where, when and who?
- Methods - measurable, access, ethical, time?
The purpose of EdD research questions within upcoming assignments are:
- To fill a gap in knowledge / show clear benefit.
- Be of use to the community.
- To be academic and professional.
- An iterative process and acceptance that the RQ's may change due to the research process.
It is now the task to continue reading up on research methods, music curriculum and music curriculum policy to give a solid grounding and understanding of this field.
- Solving practical problems requires background knowledge.
- Theoretical issues emerge when we encounter practical issues.
